Lake Powell 2015

Taking a hiatus from mountain and prairie hiking to take a family vacation to Lake Powell, Utah.  We own a partial share of the houseboat, Summer Daze, and like to take a week to lounge around in the heat and water in Utah.  There are nine of us on the boat, but it is big enough that we aren't quite elbow to elbow.

The wife and I, daughter and her family headed off to Bullfrog Basin, UT on Friday June 19.  We stay the first night at the Defiant House Lodge at Bullfrog.  The trip is about nine hours from home, so by the time we all get there we are pretty tired, ready for dinner, and then off to vegetate.  My son and his family got up early on the morning of Saturday, June 20 and arrived in Bullfrog about noon.  We took possession of the Summer Daze, loaded and headed down river toward the Escalante.  We estimated that it would take us about six hours to get to the mouth of the Escalante and then at least an hour to find a camp spot, so we decided to stop along the way near the Rincon area.  That night, we ate a good dinner, waited for the wind to die down, and then got out in the water for some wake boarding and skiing.  The water temp and weather were perfect.

We got up the next morning and headed for the Escalante where we stayed for the next three nights, camping in a variety of spots.  The weather was hot, hot, hot with day time temperatures exceeding 100 degrees.  However, we had the water to sit and play in so it wasn't too bad.

On Wednesday, we headed out of the Escalante and headed back up river to camp across the canyon from Iceberg Canyon.  Iceberg is a really nice and popular canyon, but can produce pretty rough water due to the variety of traffic.  We spent two night there, playing and relaxing.  Finally on Friday morning it was time to head back to Bullfrog to camp the last night on the beach and get ready to transfer the Summer Daze to the next users.   We had dinner at the Lodge.  A common comment was how nice it was to be back in 'civilization'.

We transferred the boat on Saturday morning then headed to Hanksville, UT to have a burger and milkshake at the Burger Shack.  A family tradition!!

The best way to tell about what we were up to is to look at the pictures.  They are a good sampling of our week.  Thanks to Just4Grins Photography for permission to use these photos!!!
